Weekend Roundup

  • George Washington senior OF/DP Amanda Zakeri broke her own school stolen base record, swiping her 28th bag of the season on Sunday against St. Joseph's.
  • Michigan freshman infielder Sierra Romero set the Wolverine single-season home run record in a Saturday rout of Northwestern. The first-year shortstop smacked her 22nd round-tripper of the season in the first inning, and was then intentionally walked three times in her following at-bats.
  • Tennessee senior second baseman Lauren Gibson also set her own home run milestone on Sunday, spanking her 17th bomb of the season and taking over as the single-season record holder for UT.
  • Thanks to Melanie Trup for this recap of Game 2 of the San Jose State/New Mexico State series!
  • The top two pitchers in the WAC (NMSU's Alex Newman and SJSU star
  • Amanda Pridmore) matched one another pitch for pitch in game one,
  • which went to extras. In a game that was scoreless through three and a
  • half, seniors Devin Caldwell and Cheryl Freitas came up big in the bottom
  • half of the fourth. Caldwell led off with a single to left, and after Michelle
  • Cox was erased at first on a bunt that advanced Caldwell to second,
  • Markesha Collins fouled out to left and Freitas then singled to first base
  • and advanced to second on an errant throw which scored Caldwell. New
  • Mexico State came right back in their half of the fifth when Kelsey Dodd
  • led off with a single (Chelsea Dohrwardt pinch ran) then after the Spartans
  • recorded two outs senior Tehani Kaaihue delivered the Aggies their first
  • run, scoring Dohrwardt. The game would then remain scoreless until it was
  • pushed into extra innings, where the Spartans won the game on a Collins
  • single to right center, 2-1.
