Former Stetson All-American pitching star Meredith Owen heads to Europe this week to begin her career as an international professional softball player.
After turning down an offer to play in the Netherlands directly following her college career’s completion, Owen was fine with the thought that her playing career was done and she would get to spend “real, quality time” with her family for the first time in four years.
When a professional team from Collecchio, Italy in the European Softball Federation came calling, Owen agreed to join the squad for the season that starts in just days. The season and postseason will run to the fall.
Owen will hit as well as pitch and field for her new team. She led her Hatters team in pitching wins as well as offensive home runs during her senior season, but this will be her first time playing the field since pre-college.
Meredith will be the only American on Team Collecchio, though each squad is allowed to have up to two on their roster. She says she will post updates from games on her Facebook page.
