Softball fans in the Sunshine State are sure to recognize the name of Dr. JoAnne Graf. But, as the question may be for those outside of that geographical proximity and those who may not be Florida State fans, who is JoAnne Graf?
Dr. Graf spent thirty years at the helm of the Florida State softball program, a tenure that included guiding the ‘Noles into the fastpitch era in 1982. Graf led Florida State to seven Women’s College World Series appearances and twenty-one NCAA tournament appearances in total.
In 2005, FSU renamed the Seminoles’ softball stadium as “JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex”. At that time, she was one of just two active coaches whose legacies were being remembered as the namesake of their team’s field.
Graf’s accomplishments also included ten ACC conference championships and six conference Coach of the Year honors. Dr. Graf retired in 2008 with 1,437 career victories, 1,218 of those coming at the Division I level.
