DeFeo recently resigned from Mercer to accept the position at GW. He had been head coach of the Mercer Bears for six seasons, amassing 147 victories during that time and leading the program through a change from the Atlantic Sun Conference to the "SoCon", the Southern Conference.

Prior to his tenure as the Bears' head coach, DeFeo had spent a lengthy eight-year tenure as Associate Head Coach at LSU under Yvette Girouard. He was a part of two Women's College World Series teams and the National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2001, as named by the NFCA.

DeFeo takes the reins from the departed Stacey Schramm and will assume the helm of a GW program that went 23-29 in 2016, with a 10-13 record in conference play. The Colonials collected victories over the Big Ten's Maryland, as well as the ACC's Virginia last season and earned the #6 overall seed in the conference tournament, going 0-2 before being eliminated.
