Former Arizona Wildcats first baseman and a part of the 2001 National Championship-winning club Erika Hanson Barnes has been named the interim athletic director for the Wildcats.
Barnes will assume the role on February 1, stepping into the position vacated by Greg Byrne, who will accept the same position at Alabama. Barnes had served as a senior athletic department official since 2013, including as the Senior Woman Administrator.
The length of Barnes' tenure in the position, nor whether or not she will be a candidate for the full-time position, was not immediately known.
Barnes received her bachelor's degree from UA in 2001 and began working for the athletic department in 2005, eventually moving up to her senior position in 2013.
Barnes has also served as a color analyst for Wildcats softball games on the radio.
