Parents of Abused Player File Suit Against School

Fatima Larios
The parents of former Division 1 and Division 2 softballer Fatima Larios, who committed suicide in January of 2015, have filed suit against Chadron State College, the school Larios attended at the time of her death, on the grounds that the institution failed to adequately take measures that would have prevented the young Larios' suicide.

The lawsuit and other documents filed as part of the proceeding include notes that Larios was abused, both physically and emotionally, by her football-player boyfriend for a significant amount of time preceding her death. The lawsuit dubs Chadron State to be "deliberately indifferent to sex-based dating violence" and says that Larios' death could have been prevented, had the school followed the proper regulations.

The Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System is named as a defendant in the suit, along with the university.

Larios was a member of the Chadron State College softball at the time of her death and had previously been rostered as an Austin Peay Governor.
