Georgia Southern Parts Ways with Annie Smith

Georgia Southern and head coach Annie Smith have parted ways, the school announced yesterday, with the program electing not to renew Smith's contract for 2018.

Smith posted a career record of 176-166 during her six seasons as the Eagles’ head coach, including a 24-29 record in 2017. She oversaw the program’s move from the Southern Conference to the Sun Belt, where the Eagles never contended for the conference title.

Prior to moving to Georgia Southern, her first career head coaching position, Smith spent fifteen years as an assistant coach and associate head coach under Jay Miller at Missouri, then of the Big 12, and Mississippi State in the SEC.

The Eagles went 24-29 in 2017, including a 12-15 conference mark. The program ended the season on a seven-game losing streak and were eliminated in the first round of the Sun Belt conference tournament.
