Michelle Gardner Out at Indiana

Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner will not return in 2018, the school announced. Gardner had just finished her ninth season at the helm of the Hoosiers.

Gardner compiled a 195-287-1 record in her near-decade at IU, including a 23-31 record in 2017. The Hoosiers went 9-14 in Big Ten play in '17 and earned the ninth overall seed in the conference tournament before losing in the first round to Michigan State.

The Hoosiers posted a 29-25 record in 2016, but prior to that had not enjoyed a win-loss above .500 since 2012. Gardner's finest season came in 2011, when she led her squad to a 37-18 record.

Termed a "resignation", Gardner's departure is the first to occur in the Big Ten this offseason.

Prior to Indiana, Gardner was the head coach at Nevada, where she was the first coach following the program's return to competition after a fourteen-year hiatus. Her resume also includes assistant coaching stops at Arizona State and Florida State, as well as Bowling Green.

Gardner was a four-year standout player for the Michigan Wolverines from 1984-1988 and was named Big Ten Player of the Year in '88.
