JWOS has learned that former UIC assistant coach Liz Beirne will be named the head coach at IUPUI.
Beirne, who spent a single season at Illinois-Chicago after following Lynn Curylo from Wright State prior to the season. In 2017, she was part of a coaching staff that led the Flames to the Horizon League championship and an NCAA tournament berth.
In addition to UIC and Wright State, Beirne's resume includes assistant coaching stints at Georgia Southern, Tennessee State, and Liberty. IUPUI will be her first position as head coach.
A former pitcher at Olivet Nazarene, Beirne was a National Christian Colleges Athletic Association first-team All-American in 2003.
She takes over an IUPUI squad that finished the 2017 season with a record of 23-31, but finished 11-6 in conference play, good enough for the #1 overall seed in the conference tournament. Interim head coach Heather Tarter earned conference Coach of the Year honors, but was not interviewed for the permanent head coaching position, as we previously reported.
The school has not announced the hiring, but a bio page for Beirne appeared on the school's website late Friday. The page remained an active link on Saturday morning and Beirne was noted as "Head Coach" on the school's staff directory. A source close to the program told JWOS that returning players had likewise not been informed of the hiring as of Saturday morning.
